At 3:30 today, I left my house to meet my parents at the Humane Society. They arrived a little later, having been delayed by tears and hugs for the dog from my siblings at home. Gussy came with them and was anxious to be there, surrounded all the smells and sounds of other dogs in the kennel area nearby.
I broke down as soon as I saw them come in, my dad carrying an old quilt. Gussy was restless and uneasy, and struggled not to slip around on the tile floor.
We spent several minutes hugging and kissing him, and telling him what a good dog he's been, and what a special friend he has been to us, and that we will miss him. We told him we hope
